The Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board celebrates Fiesta
de Luces (Festival of Lights) to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month,
which includes the Festivals of Independence from Spain by Chile,
Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua.
A main highlight of the Festival is the Parade of Nations, where
community children participate in a flag-carrying procession of
Latin American countries. This event will include main stage entertainment,
food vendors and children’s activities. This event has been taking
place since 2005.
Fiesta de Luces 2009
Fiesta de Luces 2009 will take place on:
Saturday, September 19, 2009
Location: Aurora Transportation Center’s Spring Street and Lincoln
Avenue lot.
Anima Pop, formally known as AvantGarde, is a British Pop Band that has been active since 2002 and is the winner of the “Best Spanish New Band of 2007 Award” given by the Spanish Music Press in 2008. Anima Pop songs are influenced by post punk and pop music with lyrics in English, French, and Spanish. The group has performed more than 100 concerts across the United States, United Kingdom, Spain, France, Portugal and Switzerland.
The festivities will begin with the Star Spangled Banner at 2 p.m. followed by the Parade of Nations at 2:45 p.m. Anima Pop will perform from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Also featured at Fiesta de Luceswill beLa Enkantadora Banda Karembe, Taller Borincano,Internacional Ballet Folklorico, Mariachi, as well as a beer garden, car show, boxing show, children’s cultural activities and arts and crafts.

This event was held on Saturday, September 20th, in the Aurora Transportation
Center’s Spring Street and Lincoln Avenue lot. Events in the
children’s area included the Mask Crafts Table (for el Dia de los
Muertos), a Family Tree activity with the Aurora Public Library
for the “Where I’m From/ De donde Vengo” Craft Table, Piñatas,
a facilitated craft activity with the National Museum of Mexican
Fine Arts, Music and Dance (making rain sticks or maracas, music
and demonstration of Latin rhythms), Penguin Painting, Robert
Crown Nutrition for parents, and an activity with Waubonsee Community
College.
In addition, a “Wall of Memories’ displayed photos of
the first Hispanic settlers of Aurora in the 1920s. Lastly, artists
included International Artist Juan Flores, Chicago Native Leo
Negron, and several local artists. From East Aurora High School,
we had Dagoberto Cantellan, Eduardo Gaytan, Yaki Becerra, and
Erick Garcia. Representing West Aurora High School students were
Alyeska Roman and Rosa Nevarez.
The crowd was estimated near 3,500 people.
